It's D & D!

I played Dungeons and Dragons for the very first time today. Our Dungeon Master was quite lenient, because I don't think players are supposed to kidnap NPCs, make fabulous accessories out of corpses, or lose their genitalia by failing a throw. It was quite interesting and educational, and I think we're going to make it a weekly thing, which would be fun.

I'm going to Renaissance Festival for the last time this season on Sunday, since it's the last day, so hopefully there will lots of things on sale and the Tortuga Twins show will be extra awesome. <3

I actually finished a costume by wandering into a thrift store, which I love. Streetwear!Harley is done, although I can definitely improve on the jacket. But the gloves are so perfect- red and black with hearts for the cut-out on the back of the hand. I tried to get some pictures, but the full body shots are failing, so I can't get in all the red and black I want to. (One red glove, one black glove, one red Converse, one black Converse.) I've also made significant progress on my Team Fortress 2 Spy costume, otherwise known as the only thing Debate has done for me lately. I need gloves and the ski mask, as well as a tie. I might think about reworking my Dr. Quinn costume to also work as a Medic costume, but that's very, very far off.

There is somebody in my hometown donating all their 90s pop to thrift stores, and I love them. I have a Backstreet Boys CD now. It is seriously catchy. <3 I'm chilling at home until Sunday, being silly and catching up on stuff.

Okay, easy fannish costume idea- Handler and Doll. Obviously, you need the pair for it to work, but I think it's nice and easy and comfy.

Clean

I love a clean desk. I actually have plenty of room on my desk, when it isn't covered in wrappers, notes, magazines, books, and DVDs. All my rescue books fit in their tub, instead of taking up the space of my books.

I'm dragging my feet about starting Atonement. I'm looking forward to it, certainly, but The Historian just left an awful taste in my mouth.

I stopped by the local thrift store today for a few minutes, and I came across a skirt I could use for my Dr. Quinzel costume! I was so happy. I tried on everything I have so far (I'm only missing the tie and the shoes), and I'm quite pleased with the result. The tie should be easy to find; it's only the shoes that are a bit difficult, but with the skirt found, I have a bit more money than expected to buy the shoes with.

I'm going to get myself a nun costume and a pirate costume some time in the next year. That should cover everything- nuns, pirates, and pirate nuns.

So I've signed up with cosplay.com for my costuming efforts. My account currently includes my silly Bellatrix and my Tetra- including a never before seen (oh noes) of my Tetra costume that manages to make some of my crap pieces look good!

and I still need a better scarf and hair clip before Dragon*Con rolls around. :B

ACCESSORIES
fake dark blonde ponytail
gold body paint
spirit gum
elf ears
costume dagger

CLOTHING
two small white cloth wristbands (rough white/khaki fabric)
red bandanna (smooth, red fabric)
red sash (smooth, red fabric)
pale purple sleeveless shirt
blue vest
white capris
half a yard of pale purple fabric (matching the shirt) for trimming on the capris
brown, strappy sandals (suitable for walking all day)

I am happy to report the clothes are FABULOUS- the blue shirt actually works better. And doesn't smell like old ladies. D: I just need to sew up the straps a little tighter. I am still in search of a red bandanna. I am not going to hem the vest, however- it not only looks awesome as is, it also helps me look shorter, like Tetra is. This is helpful, considering the sandals have a bit of a heel on them. You have no idea how happy I am with the clothes. Although I could do better on the sash (it's left overs Mrs. Ewing let me steal from our various sewing endeavors), it's exactly what I was thinking- a little more realistic Tetra.

The ears look freaking sweet, if a shade paler than I am. Haven't tried the spirit gum yet, as I am saving it for actual uses. I WANT MY MONEY'S WORTH.

But as far as the hair... I searched far and wide for fake hair, and when I finally tested it?

It looked ridiculous.

My haircuts are always variations on layered bobs, so my hair is not uniform length. So there's a little tuft of my hair when I clip it that I can't really cover properly with the bun. OOPS.

While I'll continue to think between now and Dragon*Con about the hair, what I'm going to do for RenFest is just part my hair in the middle and clip the rest up. It works with realistic!Tetra, so it's not a defeat or anything. I'm trying to take [profile] doirn to RenFest on Sunday for her birthday, so I need that bandanna! It's cool, we've got red napkins if all else fails.

:D

The sandals I made a compromise on- they're lovely sandals I would wear outside of a costume, but they lack the ankle strap Tetra has, so I'll just make little anklets out of a brown fabric. The shirt... I have two shirts, one purple, one blue. While her character art has a shirt that's more purple, her actual 3D model has a shirt that's more blue. D:

AND THE HAIR! I went to a wig shop and found exactly what I wanted- a fake bun. I found one that was strawberry blonde, but I'm going to color it the right color with something. I don't know what yet.

Once I find the bandanna, she's ready for RenFest. SCORE.

DUN DUN DUN.

The capris are not white, but a pale khaki, and they're full of pockets and awesome. The vest is exactly the fabric I wanted, and even has little faux mother of pearl buttons, for extra nautical points- but it is absolutely HUGE. I need to hem it considerably. And my mother, not five minutes ago, handed me the ribbons holding together a pack of hand towels, and said, "Can you use this for your costume?" YES I CAN. They're just strips of white cloth for the wristbands. PERFECT.

The shirt is proving annoyingly elusive, so bleh.

I AM NOW COMMITTED TO THIS.

I tried to go to the bank today to deposit all my monies, but the bank hates students and closes at 4:30. D:

I just spent about 39 dollars on the stuff I did have to order- the ears, the dagger, and the spirit gum. I also bought some spirit gum remover for me and the ears, and the shipping on the dagger was not so fun. My Bellatrix wig didn't have that kind of shipping! Bleh.

I am now going to actively troll for the stuff I can buy locally. The problem I do see with a lot of Tetra costumes are the proportions because of the Wind Waker/Phantom Hourglass art style. Tetra wears capris, not shorts or full length pants- in the Phantom Hourglass art, she's bending a knee, and the pants end between her knee and her calf. There's also the problem that because of the art style, nothing is really textured, so people keep using "eh" fabrics for her clothes. I'm going to get out of most of that because I'm using actual clothes, and I need to get a good textured fabric for her scarf and sash.

I need a haircut. I'm all raggedy.

FOR SHAME, PEOPLE MAGAZINE.

You have a sexiest men issue and all Sendhil Ramamurthy gets a wee little picture in the "Sexy At Any Age"? YOU PUT DANE COOK IN THAT. DANE COOK. LIKE RIGHT NEXT TO SENDHIL. THEY DO NOT COMPARE, PEOPLE MAGAZINE.

I FULLY EXPECT A MUCH BETTER REPRESENTATION OF THE PRETTY THAT IS SENDHIL NEXT YEAR, PEOPLE MAGAZINE. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE.

Man, only three episodes in the can for Heroes... luckily, that completes this current volume, so it's not jarring... bleh.

Work has commenced on the Tetra costume... in my head. :B I figured out how I'm going to do the hair. The clothes should be fairly easy, and perfect for the South in summer. I just need to troll some thrift stores... the pants, sword, and shoes are going to be the hardest part (in that order). I need to find white shorts, and stitch purple stripes near the hem, and I might try my hand at making the sword. The shoes will just be hard because while I do have a pair that might work for her, there is no way in hell I am walking all over DragonCon in them. I will just find some sandals that'll work. And, if that fails, I'll just wear my comfy sandals that are not piratey. OH DAMN THE EARS. Eh. Easy to find and buy.

You know, if I get this done before RenFest, I might try it out there, to see how it holds up for an afternoon. One summer costume for both events would be FABULOUS, especially with PANTS.

This is my reference- it's better than the Wind Waker one. Plus, Tetra does not approve of whatever the hell you're doing. She wants you to stop. Close that window, that's dirty!

Oh, you know you want to.

On a related note, I need to find that Bellatrix wig.
