Film

Ex Machina (2015)

So atmospheric, unsettling, and original.

Television

Star Wars: The Clone Wars, "Hunt for Ziro,” "Heroes on Both Sides,” "Pursuit of Peace,” "Nightsisters,” "Monster,” and "Witches of the Mist"

Holy crow—Sy Snootles the assassin, Padmé’s former mentor as a separatist, and Asajj Ventress returning to the Nightsisters? SO MANY LADIES!!!

Film

Coming to America (1988)

A sweet, if uneven, romantic comedy with the faintest leanings towards being generally pro-immigrant, that nonetheless heralds Eddie Murphy’s nineties shlock peak.

How to Marry a Millionaire (1953)

Sharp, interior, and gorgeous, but quickly loses its sharpness in favor of something shaggier and slapstickier.

Labyrinth (1986)

Definitely holds up—except for that CGI owl and the fiery gang (???)—as an exploration into the mental landscape of a young fantasy-obsessed woman.

Television

Star Wars: The Clone Wars, “R2 Come Home” and “Lethal Trackdown”

I will never get tired of people crapping on droids and Anakin having faith in them, because droids are the only people he can trust (besides his secret wife). I will, however, always get very tired of baby Boba Fett.

Film

X-Men: Apocalypse (2016)

A hot mess of a film with too many characters doing too many things, great character moments, and a less than able grasp on things like plot structure—so, an X-Men movie. Definitely fun, definitely silly, and I definitely enjoyed myself.

Television

Star Wars: The Clone Wars, “Bounty Hunters,” “The Zillo Beast,” “The Zillo Beast Strikes Back,” “Death Trap”

Here’s why Palpatine is the best: he’s flexible in his nefarious deeds! When he can’t kill the Zillo beast on his own in his secret evil lab, he allows it to be set loose so the Jedi can murder it for him. Whatta guy.

Film

Captain America: Civil War (2016)

Almost as ideologically chewy as Captain America: Winter Soldier, but definitely lesser than that film, because it’s both more of an Avengers movie and has to set up certain pieces on the great chess board of the franchise. The Russos do well—very well—with that, but it’s still not as tight.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens, “try growing on for size” by imochan, Kylo/Hux, AU

I’ve never been into high school AUs, but for some reason the Kylo/Hux ones give me life. And this one is particularly gorgeously written, with spot-on characterization and lovely moments.

Film

Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)

I thought I was prepared for how awful this movie was, but I wasn’t. There are baffling choices to laugh and giggle at, but it’s mostly an endless, grey, wet, nihilistic slog that will destroy your faith in humanity.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)

Which is why I had to go home and watch Star Wars: The Force Awakens just to regain my will to live.

Leap Year (2009)

“Please, God, just let her be playing Sweet Dee in this movie.”

Television

Saturday Night Live, “Jonah Hill/The Future”

Real rough episode, with the racism of the auction sketch and the sexism of the Inside SoCal sketch. (The latter seems like it wants to be more self-aware about teenage boys badgering a girl who is getting a breast reduction, but never gets there.) But I am very much a fan of that drawing room murder sketch.

Film

Dredd (2012)

A midnight movie fit for tumblr that plays like the little sister of Mad Max: Fury Road and The Raid. Extremely solid and also features Lena Headey almost knifing Domhnall Gleason in the belly. I am a simple woman of simple tastes.

Television

Funny Or Die Presents Donald Trump's The Art Of The Deal: The Movie

I just super-needed something silly and dumb this week, and this fit the bill. Depp does great weird comedy, so it’s nice to see him apply himself to this. Also, that theme song is great.

Music

Selena Gomez, Revival

Film

Humpday (2009)

Well-executed… but very much navel-gazing white dude indie shenanigans.

Music

AWOL Nation, Megalithic Symphony

Hostile and earnest in equal measure, which certainly appeals to me. Stand outs: “All I Need,” “People,” “Jump on my Shoulders”, and “Wake Up.”

AWOL Nation, Run

Second verse, similar to the first, but more scattered on the edges. “Hollow Moon” is obviously the purest and most danceable distillation of this attitude, but “Woman Woman,” an otherwise lovely song about loving someone, is still dotted with melancholy and promises of a better future.

Television

Agent Carter, “Better Angels”

How is this show so aggressively good? Like. Criticizing it only makes the showrunners thoughtfully reevaluate and organically tool it to be better. All the characters are interesting (or have interesting hooks, like Jack, who is trying to do the right thing—in the power structure that rewards men like him because I’m assuming daddy issues), the dialogue is snappy and great, Dr. Wilkes and Peggy are amazing together, and somebody eats a Sklar brother. The hits just keep on coming.

Film

The Princess Diaries (2001)

“Lilly, you are a terrible friend!”

Music

Asia, Aqua

“Crimes of the Heart” feels like the platonic ideal of soft rock anthem about crying over a girl. I like it.

Asia, Phoenix, XXX, Gravitas

…I definitely listened to these this week.

Television

Agent Carter, “The Lady in the Lake”

The greatest show on television is back and they actually listened to the fans when they said they wanted more diversity!

Agent Carter, “A View in the Dark”

I love Peggy and Violet being instant friends (because I’m so sick of women competing against each other for dudes); I think Wendy is going to be a really fascinating villain; and Dr. Wilkes is awesome. And ugh, Peggy and Jarvis’ perfect banter.

Saturday Night Live, “Adam Driver/Chris Stapleton”

…well, I guess I’m on the Adam Driver train now.

Fanfiction

Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Finn/Poe, “Just Call Us Superstars” by partypaprika

Finn and Poe work it out after Finn wakes up. Amazing how quickly tropes develop these days.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Finn/Poe, “better stand up straight” by middlecyclone

Finn and Poe work it out after Finn wakes up, now with Poe telling Finn that he doesn’t want weird sexy thanks if he feels obligated.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Finn/Poe, “(Mis)use the Force” by Ptolemia

Rey uses the Force to help Finn out with his Poe problem. Very cute and cracky, with bonus Luke and Leia.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Finn/Poe, “Coupling” by Mamalazzer

Everyone thinks Finn and Poe are dating; Finn has a hilarious crisis over this.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Finn/Poe, “Awakenings” by beetle

Poe waits for Finn to wake up.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Finn/Poe, “just like it should” by fabrega

Poe’s fellow pilots encourage him to DO SOMETHING about his feelings for Finn. This might be my favorite Jessika Pava so far.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Finn/Poe, “crooked on my chrome” by dansunedisco

BB-8 plays matchmaker and tries to be real smooth about it.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Finn/Poe, “No other exile” by queerly_it_is

This is much more about Phasma getting captured and dealing with the fallout of that, but there is a side slice of Finn/Poe.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Finn/Poe, “the coat thief” by Gretahs

Details BB-8’s journey over the course of the film, with a Finn/Poe coda. Adorable.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Finn/Poe, “The Lightness of Feeling” by aesdiac

Rey and BB-8 play matchmaker. Unfortunately, Finn is pretty thick when it comes to this stuff.

Television

Saturday Night Live, “Tina Fey and Amy Poehler/Bruce Springsteen”

Television

Saturday Night Live, “Chris Hemsworth/Chance the Rapper”

People picking on Colin Jost is never not funny to me, but the standout for me is the “Our Friend Claire” sketch. It takes the “hur hur men in dresses are inherently funny” conceit and actually makes it funny by making it about Hemsworth trying to infiltrate a ladies’ brunch to make himself feel better about his looks; all the cast members overselling this bit—Cecily Strong especially—make it really perfect.

Fanfiction

Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi/Qui-Gon Jinn, “Hour that is mine” by randomalia (spilinski)

Looks like my sci-fi ships are all about the tragedy of surviving your beloved and living on a desert planet. Obi-Wan contemplates what he’s lost in exile, and I cry a thousand buckets.

Star Wars, “Hope’s Worth is Written with a Golden Quill” by akathecentimere

A fic about Obi-Wan rediscovering his purpose during his first year on Tatooine. Delicious feels.

Star Wars, “Reunion” by Nix (CrimsonQuills)

Force ghost kisses and Luke’s blessing. The only kind of fluff I will allow for this ship.

Fanvid

Agent Carter, “1941” by rhoboat

Snappy, fun, and features a honk sound for Peggy honking Steve’s pec. FLAWLESS.

Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi/Qui-Gon Jinn, “My Immortal” by sian1359

Tripping over this while rifling through the prequels fandom’s corpse’s pockets was monumental, to say the least. Oh, does this take me back.

Film

Carol (2015)

Pitch perfect and lush, but Blanchett’s choices as Carol reminded me too much of my mom to be comfortable.

Sailor Moon, “Shadow of Evil: the Trio's Last Chance”

WAIT, WHAT? The Amazon Trio learn that they aren’t, technically, people, sending Fish’s Eye into an identity crisis over whether or not he even has a soul. This is some dark stuff.

Sailor Moon, “Mirrors of Dreams: the Amazon's Last Stage”

And it gets darker… until all three are redeemed, despite their rampage of assault across Tokyo for the last few weeks. I really do love Fish’s Eye trying to negotiate his humanity, though.
