Star Trek: The Next Generation, “Identity Crisis”

How refreshing to see a past relationship that was “just” a super-important friendship between a woman and Geordi.

A breathtaking soak that is at the same atmospheric pitch at the show itself. Marvelous. (Also, I’m a monster, because that thigh prosciutto sounded SO. GOOD.)

Television

A Very Murray Christmas (2015)

Too cynical and grumpy and indie for my tastes. Miley Cyrus can still SING, though, and George Clooney affably popping out behind a tree to talk about Santa’s love life is both great and traumatizing.

Saturday Night Live, “Ryan Gosling/Leon Bridges”

Aidy Bryant wins this episode with Morgan, the overexcited thirteen year old, and almost not breaking in that alien abduction sketch. (Love that misplaced confidence.) And I kind of adore the Kinky Elves? It’s such a silly sketch, but Kenan and Vanessa’s little excited physical ticks are hilarious. As was Gosling’s elf losing all interest as soon as he realized no shenanigans were to be had. It was also good the first time. And then Taran pulled out a George Clooney impression? Is he just king of impossible male impressions? Magnificent.

Sailor Moon, “A Guardian’s Realization: Strength Lies Within a Pure Heart”

Sailor Moon, “Meeting of Destiny: The Night Pegasus Dances”

…does Fish Eye wear a puffy blue jumpsuit? And Tiger’s Eye, he is honestly wearing a pair of razor blades as earrings? Holy cow, we’ve found the worst dressed people in a nineties shoujo anime.

THE PERFECT STEFON AND SETH FIC. Not only does it balance the unreality of Saturday Night Live with real emotions, but it’s also funny, sweet, and well put together. I LOVE IT.

Television

30 Rock, “Pilot”

I was prepared for much, much worse, but this isn’t bad. It’s dated, to be true, but there’s a point and a specific vision to it. Intriguing.

Sailor Moon, “Death of the Sailor Guardians: The Tragic Final Battle”

I knew this was coming, via this AV Club roundtable, but it’s still really hard to see. Firstly, having Jupiter die first? HOW DARE YOU. (I adore Mako: her height, her strength, her boy craziness, and her sublimated queer yearnings.) Secondly, seeing Usagi just completely break down is really painful and a little creepy. It’s an odd choice, especially for an otherwise light show.

Sailor Moon, “Usagi’s Eternal Wish: a Brand New Life”

I also knew that everything reset, but I didn’t realize it was in the space of a cut. C’mon, show. But touching, to say the least, from Usagi’s exhausted relief at finally saving Mamoru, the only thing she has left after the other Guardians die, to her refusal to kiss his corpse out of respect for her friends’ thwarted lives. (THIS IS SO DARK!)

The Thick of It, Malcolm/Jamie, “it ends where it begins” by postcardmystery

Love a good time spanning fic, as well as any The Thick of It fic that manages to accurately capture a part of the show’s tone and the characters’ voices. It’s quite hard to do, but the fandom is so dedicated that it’s admirable. This threatens to be part of a series, but it works well just as it is, tracing Malcolm and Jamie’s relationship from its beginnings to Jamie’s last appearance on the show.

Film

Frank (2014)

This should come with a trigger warning about your impostor syndrome, seeing how it’s about a man who loves music so much but can’t be a part of it because he DESTROYS IT. (Or tries.) Melancholy, darkly funny, and slightly hopeful.

Lucy (2014)

Bonkers and racist. But ScarJo is fantastic.

Funny Face (1957)

Star Trek: The Next Generation, “Remember Me”

Star Trek: The Next Generation, “Legacy”

The wonderful thing about Data is how inhuman he is. I like the darker flashes—like Data being capable of murder—but this one, where he’s attempting to process human friendship through his unique perspective, works. And I really love how Tasha has a presence in the series after her death and isn’t just thrown away.

Doctor Who, “Into the Dalek”

Captain America: The Winter Soldier, “untitled” by potofsoup

I wish this had a title so badly. Heartwrenching ficlet about all the habits Bucky picked up to compensate for Steve’s various disabilities, what happened to them during the war, and what the Winter Soldier did with them. I am an ocean of tears, good night.

Top Gun, Maverick/Iceman, “Attitude Adjustment” by thefourthvine

Did you know that I used to read fic without having seen the source material? (My apologies, Gundam Wing.) This was just one such fic. But this has a spot on my fic rec list of what to read after you’ve fallen in love with an obscure ship. Maverick/Iceman doesn’t seem obscure, true, but remember that it is largely shipped by people giggling at how gay Top Gun is, not the usual slashers. Anyway, a scorchingly NFSW fic that gets the characters perfectly.

Film

Top Gun (1987)

If you could overlay “Danger Zone” over that volleyball game, you would have the height of the eighties. It’s not a good movie (characterization? what’s characterization?), but it’s a fun one.

Television

Sailor Moon, “Usagi vs. Rei: Nightmare in Dream Land”

I’m not sure how to feel about Usagi and Rei’s rivalry over Tuxedo Mask. First, I’m told that wasn’t in the original manga (Rei, need a boy? PSSSSSSSH), but it’s clearly here to generate filler: Rei rags on Usagi for being a flirt, but also experiences the same kind of emotions. But it doesn’t bring them together—it tears them apart, with Ami playing mediator. It’s… hard to look at. But those nineties fashions sure aren’t.

Sailor Moon, “I Want a Boyfriend: The Luxury Cruise Ship Is a Trap”

And just as Rei and Usagi continue to bicker without getting to know one another, we get a positive female relationship with Queen Beryl and Thetis, the Monster of the Week. Thetis, head over heels over Jadeite, offers to help, and ends up getting killed for her troubles, which angers Queen Beryl to the point that Jadeite is finally on the chopping block for being awful.

Sailor Moon, “Girl Power! The End of Jadeite”

Ladies, you run sideways from a plane, c’mon. Notable for the girls using their attacks together for the first time, which ends with Jadeite getting offed (by nineties anime standards) at the end of the episode. Later, hater.

Sailor Moon, “A New Enemy Appears: Nephrite’s Evil Crest”

The new general, Nephrite, has a much easier plan: use the stars to identify one human to drain energy from, after agitating them to peak energy. This also means that we get more characterization, since we’re not dealing with large amounts of people. Sure, Usagi gets the usual crap thrown at her, but it’s softened when Naru comes to her for help and Usagi offers it freely. (True, that comes with Usagi realizing that this might be just the right way to show up Rei and Luna for crapping on her 24/7, but she’s fourteen, people.) I like Usagi because she’s so unapologetically a teenage girl, but this was the first time I got a glimmer of why Sailor Moon is a real hero. D’aww.

Fic

21 Jump Street, Jenko/Schmidt, “Destiny,” by Resonant

Well, duh, I was going to go looking for fic. Now, the problem with a lot of fic for comedies is that the fandom is, in my experience, more interested in cuties boffing than the comedy and characterization. It’s just a matter of what writers certain fandoms attract: the smaller the fandom, the lower the probability that you’ll get a constant stream of amazing things, as, I believe, the Sherlock fandom is enjoying. SO! I am glad these two fics exist, because they are very funny, true to the characters, and scorchingly hot. “Destiny” locks our protagonists in a cupboard and is the funnier of the two.

21 Jump Street, Jenko/Schmidt, “We Never Thought We’d Find a Place Where We Belong,” by withthepilot

Although that’s only by a very slim margin, because this one has a perfect balance of fluff, smut, and comedy. (This is all I ever want in life.) From Jenko trying to steal a defaced photo of Schmidt from his mom’s house to Schmidt approaching his attraction to Jenko with grim resolution and the voices are pitch perfect. J’adore.

Film

The Sandlot (1993)

I haven’t seen this in years! It is such an early nineties live action Disney picture, from the clinical opening shot to the MS Paint logo, but there are some fantastic moments. I am wildly uncomfortable that Squints gets away with tricking an adult woman into kissing him to the point that the film thinks of it so warmly that they get married and have tons of sex.

21 Jump Street (2012)

Apparently 22 Jump Street is so hilariously meta that I have to see it, so 21 Jump Street became required viewing. And it’s a lot cleverer than anticipated! The fact that Jenko and Schmidt become fast friends simply because they want to, despite their high school “rivalry,” is incredibly sweet, and makes for a much more interesting friendship than the usual targets for bromantic antics. (I’m weary of the word bromance.) And they’re also just fun characters to spend time with. Two Dipshits Do Something is a fantastic microgenre in comedy (though I don’t care for Dumb and Dumber), and, in that sense, this reminds me of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, with one character being marginally more cunning than the other but still operating in total madness. (Thus ends the only comparison to Jane Russell Jonah Hill will ever enjoy.) The jokes are pretty fast and furious, so what doesn’t work is quickly forgotten, and the pacing is fantastic. Plus: I did not realize Channing Tatum is a comedic genius. Jenko is just so beautifully, perfectly stupid, adhering to his own bizarre but affable logic. (Hell, he wins arguments with Schmidt a couple times.)

So, I quite liked it! And I always like comedies about morons that actually respect and like their characters.

Music

The Ark, Prayer for the Weekend

When “Man, remember when I was super into the Ark last year?” turned into “Oh snap, Prayer for the Weekend is on Spotify!” “All I Want Is You” is good, clean, representational fun (the narrator has had boyfriends and girlfriends before becoming consumed by their love for the unspecified subject), while “Prayer for the Weekend” is elegant and dancey. “New Pollution” is dancey angst.

REO Speedwagon, REO Speedwagon

Oh, snap, I listened to these this week! I’m more interested in their later material, so neither stuck.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Steve/Bucky, “Steve Rogers at 100: Celebrating Captain America on Film,” by eleveninches, Febricant, hellotailor, M_Leigh, neenya, tigrrmilk

GENIUS. From the casting to Ron Livingston’s dark mutterings to Steve and Bucky’s reactions… it’s hilarious. And Steve and Bucky getting together is nicely done.

Film

Maleficent (2014)

Oh, honey, this was in production forever, wasn’t it? The voice over speaks to a lack of footage, despite the film’s fleet runtime, and its attempts to adhere to the original film feel like railroading. But when it does its own thing, finally, it tells a really interesting story about Maleficent and Aurora becoming a unique family, female power, body horror, and how dudes are basically just bonuses. Shame that’s only twenty minutes.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012)

A flawless adaptation is not the same thing as a pure adaptation. Never broadcasts its time period, but oh, Charlie. Perfectly captures Charlie’s blend of social isolation, trauma, and attempts to deal with it, and his journey from wallflower to fully realized human being. I wept.

(Also: this features Ezra Miller in a corset. You are welcome.)

X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014)

Never successfully marries together the timelines to the degree it thinks it does, and the ending does require you to have really, really liked the original X-Men films. (Which I did, but I just liked First Class so much more.) But the character stuff, despite being a little truncated due to its CAST OF THOUSANDS, holds beautifully: witness Erik roaring at Charles for abandoning everybody but Hank, because they’re dead without him. Erik and Charles making up in the future. Logan (despite his overuse) struggling with playing mentor to Charles. And, surprisingly, Quicksilver as a little kleptomaniac shit. The “Time in a Bottle” sequence is golden, as is his careless but quick defusion of an inherently tense situation between Erik and Charles. I wish we’d gotten more time with him (although we undoubtedly will).

Television

Sailor Moon, “Learn How to Be Skinny from Usagi”

This does go hand in hand with the show having the villains exploiting what our culture considers feminine concerns, as Jadeite preys on the girls’ fear of being fat. This one, though, does take a crack at Usagi, with Luna tossing sketches of a chubby Usagi at her to motivate it. Even the mostly good-natured joke—Usagi takes to combat as soon as she realizes it totally counts as exercise!—feels mean when we end with Usagi crying over her weight. Not my favorite of the first four.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier, “Almond, Clavicle, Orchid” by kvikindi

Elementary, “The Man With the Twisted Lip”

Joan and Sherlock struggle over boundaries, which I always appreciate, especially Joan’s laser-focused takedown of Sherlock’s heartfelt apology. And I am pretty okay with Joan and Mycroft getting together—they like each other in a nonromantic context as well, and they discuss boundaries! I assume this is part of Mycroft’s larger play, however, so boo.

I am not one hundred percent on Joan getting kidnapped. I think they’ll pull it off well—hell, Liu directs the next episode!—but it could go wrong. The teaser seemed to focus on Sherlock attempting to function with Joan, which I kind of like. But I hope that Joan rescues herself.

Star Trek: The Next Generation, “Transfigurations”

Fair enough story, but, of course, I particularly adored Worf’s love advice.

Star Trek: The Next Generation, “The Best of Both Worlds Part I”

Man, the summer of 1990 must have been insane, waiting for this to resolve. That ending? Riker finally showing his true command potential in this awful, awful situation? Harrowing. I also really enjoyed Riker trying to get to the bottom of his own insecurities about taking the captaincy because Shelby—who is girl original flavor Riker—is there to remind him of where he’s come from.
