Television

Black Mirror, “The National Anthem,” “15 Million Credits,” and “Be Right Back”

Unrelently dark satire, which is much needed at the moment. “Be Right Back” turned out to be my favorite, because it showed technology interrupting a woman’s grieving process—who wouldn’t want to see their loved ones again after their death? I was particularly fascinated by the fact that the synthetic Ash is TOO good at being kind and open and receptive, which is what makes him so unreal to Martha. She would have to fight for his attention, so to have the Ash-bot patiently await her every need? Spooks her.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars, “Overlords,” “Altar of Mortis,” and “Ghost of Mortis”

Anakin nearly breaking down completely on seeing what, at first, appears to be Shmi’s ghost broke my heart.

So atmospheric, unsettling, and original.

Television

Star Wars: The Clone Wars, "Hunt for Ziro,” "Heroes on Both Sides,” "Pursuit of Peace,” "Nightsisters,” "Monster,” and "Witches of the Mist"

Holy crow—Sy Snootles the assassin, Padmé’s former mentor as a separatist, and Asajj Ventress returning to the Nightsisters? SO MANY LADIES!!!

Film

Coming to America (1988)

A sweet, if uneven, romantic comedy with the faintest leanings towards being generally pro-immigrant, that nonetheless heralds Eddie Murphy’s nineties shlock peak.

How to Marry a Millionaire (1953)

Sharp, interior, and gorgeous, but quickly loses its sharpness in favor of something shaggier and slapstickier.

Labyrinth (1986)

Definitely holds up—except for that CGI owl and the fiery gang (???)—as an exploration into the mental landscape of a young fantasy-obsessed woman.

Television

Star Wars: The Clone Wars, “R2 Come Home” and “Lethal Trackdown”

I will never get tired of people crapping on droids and Anakin having faith in them, because droids are the only people he can trust (besides his secret wife). I will, however, always get very tired of baby Boba Fett.

Film

X-Men: Apocalypse (2016)

A hot mess of a film with too many characters doing too many things, great character moments, and a less than able grasp on things like plot structure—so, an X-Men movie. Definitely fun, definitely silly, and I definitely enjoyed myself.

Television

Star Wars: The Clone Wars, “Bounty Hunters,” “The Zillo Beast,” “The Zillo Beast Strikes Back,” “Death Trap”

Here’s why Palpatine is the best: he’s flexible in his nefarious deeds! When he can’t kill the Zillo beast on his own in his secret evil lab, he allows it to be set loose so the Jedi can murder it for him. Whatta guy.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars, “The Deserter,” “Lightsaber Lost,” “The Mandalore Plot,” “Voyage of Temptation,” “Duchess of Mandalore,” “Senate Murders,” “Cat and Mouse”

Ah, Satine! I’d heard of her, beforehand, and I quite like her, although Obi-Wan being SUPERCHILL about the fact that he would have left the Jedi Order for her feels weird. (They were playing that up for the moment, right?) What I do love, however, is Anakin’s reaction to this, from twigging onto what went down immediately to calling her his girlfriend to totally murderizing that dude because some people have moral objections to this stuff. Anakin, you hot mess.

That mom haircut sketch is GOLD.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars, “Senate Spy,” “Landing at Point Rain,” “Weapons Factory,” “Legacy of Terror,” “Brain Invaders, “Grevious Intrigue”

Okay, three things I want to talk about. First, Padmé having to seduce—they say friendship, we know what’s up—another senator for the Jedi and Anakin reacting PERFECTLY CALMLY about that. (Although Anakin sort of callously throwing that senator to the wolves to save Padmé? This is why this ship is fucked up. And also great. AND ALSO FUCKED UP.) Second, Barriss!!! Like, Teen Girl Padawan Squad! I love seeing Ahsoka have a friend her age to talk to, I love them talking Jedi morality, I love their rapport. Lastly, oh my God, I thought Obi-Wan’s banter with Asajj was flirty. He needs to… calm down in regard to Grevious. Heavens.

An album that makes the refrain of “Backstreet’s back, alright” poignant and tragic. WIZARDS.

Television

Star Wars: The Clone Wars, “Innocents of Ryloth,” “Liberty on Ryloth,” and “Hostage Crisis”

Anakin and Padmé are in perfect idiot form in “Hostage Crisis”, from Anakin making it really clear he is WAY MORE into her than she him to Anakin giving her his lightsaber to prove his love to Bail Organa wondering why Padmé has a Jedi lightsaber and Padmé being like “IT DOESN’T MATTER.”

Music

The Bangles, All Over The Place, Different Light, and Everything

“In Your Room” is so adorable.

Crystal Castles, Crystal Castles

I meant to get through all of Crystal Castles’ discography, but the second album is too clashy for me. But “Crimewave” sounds perfectly elegant to me: a nightmare of a video game soundtrack, played in the dark, digital light flickering over you.

Electric Six, Switzerland and Fire

I usually try to listen to discographies in order, but this playlist got messed up. “Night Vision,” “Rubber Rocket,” “Infected Girls,” and “Slices of You” are all great, like The Ark but darker. I was surprised to find that Electric Six is American—I’ve always enjoyed their weird, seemingly secondhand English lyrics.

Oh, and “Danger! High Voltage” is a goddamn classic.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens, “try growing on for size” by imochan, Kylo/Hux, AU

Film

Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)

I thought I was prepared for how awful this movie was, but I wasn’t. There are baffling choices to laugh and giggle at, but it’s mostly an endless, grey, wet, nihilistic slog that will destroy your faith in humanity.

I’m appalled that “Bombad Jedi” made me like Jar Jar Binks for a second (when he kisses that giant sea monster he made friends with). I am delighted, however, that the show is devoted enough to Anakin and Padmé being idiots that Anakin just leaves his clothes on her cruiser. YOU IDIOTS. <3

The return of the greatest musical impression sketch of all time was not as good as the first, but we cannot all be Bruno Mars featuring Jason Sudeikis.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars, “Ambush” and “Rising Malevolence”

Even as the rest of fandom starts preparing for Captain America: Civil War, I am lost to my Star Wars feelings. (This is why I can’t stop writing Star Wars fic, by the way.) Thus, The Clone Wars, although I belatedly realized that I need to watch the movie first. I was mightily confused by the “pilot” being about Yoda. I’m enjoying it so far, despite the existential dread the droids’ self-awareness fills me with (THEY ARE SO CAVALIER ABOUT DYING!!!). Also: Dooku using a hologram in a hologram? Silliness.

Finn and Poe work it out after Finn wakes up, now with Poe telling Finn that he doesn’t want weird sexy thanks if he feels obligated.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Finn/Poe, “(Mis)use the Force” by Ptolemia

Rey uses the Force to help Finn out with his Poe problem. Very cute and cracky, with bonus Luke and Leia.

People picking on Colin Jost is never not funny to me, but the standout for me is the “Our Friend Claire” sketch. Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi/Qui-Gon Jinn, “Hour that is mine” by randomalia (spilinski)

Okay, there were a few moments where I went “BULLSHIT!” (Leia saying she’s always known Luke is her brother) and “THE LORD OF THE RINGS DID IT BETTER!” (Theoden’s dying scene with Eowyn—in the films, obviously—is pretty much cribbed from here, and I think it works better, because they went through Theoden’s curse/depression together), but for the most part, a nice way to cap off the series. The Ewoks weren’t annoying; I kind of like their design, since they’re little nightmare teddy bears, but the party at the end was a bit much. In any case, Leia was particularly awesome here, and I love the idea that she’s going to go on and become a Jedi herself. (And I kinda of love that in her reaction to the reveal, you get all the expected stuff, and a hint of “OH MY GOD I KISSED MY BROTHER?”, which shows up in Han’s reaction to the same fact.) I hope that happened in the Expanded Universe. We’re bouncing from a lighter film (with the Ewoks) to a more emotionally mature one (the family drama), but it coheres more than it doesn’t.

And the Rancor beastmaster is the best joke in the entire trilogy, I think. Although Obi-Wan trying to cover his ass via “Well, Luke, from a certain point of view, I didn’t lie to you at all!” is pretty good. Is it policy that Jedi Masters can just screw with their Padawans? Because I dig that.
