Television

Saturday Night Live, “Brie Larson/Alicia Keys”

That mom haircut sketch is GOLD.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars, “Senate Spy,” “Landing at Point Rain,” “Weapons Factory,” “Legacy of Terror,” “Brain Invaders, “Grevious Intrigue”

Okay, three things I want to talk about. First, Padmé having to seduce—they say friendship, we know what’s up—another senator for the Jedi and Anakin reacting PERFECTLY CALMLY about that. (Although Anakin sort of callously throwing that senator to the wolves to save Padmé? This is why this ship is fucked up. And also great. AND ALSO FUCKED UP.) Second, Barriss!!! Like, Teen Girl Padawan Squad! I love seeing Ahsoka have a friend her age to talk to, I love them talking Jedi morality, I love their rapport. Lastly, oh my God, I thought Obi-Wan’s banter with Asajj was flirty. He needs to… calm down in regard to Grevious. Heavens.

Music

The Bangles, All Over The Place, Different Light, and Everything

“In Your Room” is so adorable.

Crystal Castles, Crystal Castles

I meant to get through all of Crystal Castles’ discography, but the second album is too clashy for me. But “Crimewave” sounds perfectly elegant to me: a nightmare of a video game soundtrack, played in the dark, digital light flickering over you.

Electric Six, Switzerland and Fire

I usually try to listen to discographies in order, but this playlist got messed up. “Night Vision,” “Rubber Rocket,” “Infected Girls,” and “Slices of You” are all great, like The Ark but darker. I was surprised to find that Electric Six is American—I’ve always enjoyed their weird, seemingly secondhand English lyrics.

Oh, and “Danger! High Voltage” is a goddamn classic.

Television

Saturday Night Live, "Russell Crowe/Margo Price"

Unbearably dull.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars
, “The Hidden Enemy”, “Blue Shadow Virus”, “Mystery of the Thousand Moons”, and “Storm Over Ryloth”

“Anakin, you have to let me die.”

“NOT AN OPTION.”

Ugh, Anakin and Padmé are going to be the death of me, I love those morons.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens, “Friction” by Studio Sagittarius, Kylo/Hux

I’ve been writing increasingly filthy Kylo/Hux fic for the last three months and this animated fanart fanvid still makes me go red in the face, it’s so good. AAAHHHH.

Television

Saturday Night Live, “Fred Willard/DEVO”

Ah, at last, the future.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars, “Rookies”

…did one of those clones have an American accent, or did I black out? Also: take a drink whenever a clone mentions “our home world of Kamino” instead of “home” or “Kamino” like a real person.

Television

Saturday Night Live, “Ariana Grande/Ariana Grande”

The return of the greatest musical impression sketch of all time was not as good as the first, but we cannot all be Bruno Mars featuring Jason Sudeikis.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars, “Ambush” and “Rising Malevolence”

Even as the rest of fandom starts preparing for Captain America: Civil War, I am lost to my Star Wars feelings. (This is why I can’t stop writing Star Wars fic, by the way.) Thus, The Clone Wars, although I belatedly realized that I need to watch the movie first. I was mightily confused by the “pilot” being about Yoda. I’m enjoying it so far, despite the existential dread the droids’ self-awareness fills me with (THEY ARE SO CAVALIER ABOUT DYING!!!). Also: Dooku using a hologram in a hologram? Silliness.

Film

Leap Year (2009)

“Please, God, just let her be playing Sweet Dee in this movie.”

Television

Saturday Night Live, “Jonah Hill/The Future”

Real rough episode, with the racism of the auction sketch and the sexism of the Inside SoCal sketch. (The latter seems like it wants to be more self-aware about teenage boys badgering a girl who is getting a breast reduction, but never gets there.) But I am very much a fan of that drawing room murder sketch.

A midnight movie fit for tumblr that plays like the little sister of Mad Max: Fury Road and The Raid. Extremely solid and also features Lena Headey almost knifing Domhnall Gleason in the belly. I am a simple woman of simple tastes.

Film

Humpday (2009)

Well-executed… but very much navel-gazing white dude indie shenanigans.

Music

AWOL Nation, Megalithic Symphony

Hostile and earnest in equal measure, which certainly appeals to me. Stand outs: “All I Need,” “People,” “Jump on my Shoulders”, and “Wake Up.”

AWOL Nation, Run

Second verse, similar to the first, but more scattered on the edges. “Hollow Moon” is obviously the purest and most danceable distillation of this attitude, but “Woman Woman,” an otherwise lovely song about loving someone, is still dotted with melancholy and promises of a better future.

Television

Agent Carter, “Better Angels”

How is this show so aggressively good? Like. Criticizing it only makes the showrunners thoughtfully reevaluate and organically tool it to be better. All the characters are interesting (or have interesting hooks, like Jack, who is trying to do the right thing—in the power structure that rewards men like him because I’m assuming daddy issues), the dialogue is snappy and great, Dr. Wilkes and Peggy are amazing together, and somebody eats a Sklar brother. The hits just keep on coming.

Film

The Princess Diaries (2001)

“Lilly, you are a terrible friend!”

Music

Asia, Aqua

“Crimes of the Heart” feels like the platonic ideal of soft rock anthem about crying over a girl. I like it.

Asia, Phoenix, XXX, Gravitas

…I definitely listened to these this week.

Television

Agent Carter, “The Lady in the Lake”

The greatest show on television is back and they actually listened to the fans when they said they wanted more diversity!

Agent Carter, “A View in the Dark”

I love Peggy and Violet being instant friends (because I’m so sick of women competing against each other for dudes); I think Wendy is going to be a really fascinating villain; and Dr. Wilkes is awesome. And ugh, Peggy and Jarvis’ perfect banter.

Saturday Night Live, “Adam Driver/Chris Stapleton”

…well, I guess I’m on the Adam Driver train now.

Star Trek: The Next Generation, “The Drumhead”

A politically very interesting episode, with Admiral Norah Satie using a saboteur onboard the Enterprise to further her xenophobic goals. Jean Simmons crushes it.

Fanfiction

Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Finn/Poe, “Just Call Us Superstars” by partypaprika

Finn and Poe work it out after Finn wakes up. Amazing how quickly tropes develop these days.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Finn/Poe, “better stand up straight” by middlecyclone

Finn and Poe work it out after Finn wakes up, now with Poe telling Finn that he doesn’t want weird sexy thanks if he feels obligated.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Finn/Poe, “(Mis)use the Force” by Ptolemia

Rey uses the Force to help Finn out with his Poe problem. Very cute and cracky, with bonus Luke and Leia.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Finn/Poe, “Coupling” by Mamalazzer

Everyone thinks Finn and Poe are dating; Finn has a hilarious crisis over this.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Finn/Poe, “Awakenings” by beetle

Poe waits for Finn to wake up.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Finn/Poe, “just like it should” by fabrega

Poe’s fellow pilots encourage him to DO SOMETHING about his feelings for Finn. This might be my favorite Jessika Pava so far.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Finn/Poe, “crooked on my chrome” by dansunedisco

BB-8 plays matchmaker and tries to be real smooth about it.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Finn/Poe, “No other exile” by queerly_it_is

This is much more about Phasma getting captured and dealing with the fallout of that, but there is a side slice of Finn/Poe.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Finn/Poe, “the coat thief” by Gretahs

Details BB-8’s journey over the course of the film, with a Finn/Poe coda. Adorable.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Finn/Poe, “The Lightness of Feeling” by aesdiac

Rey and BB-8 play matchmaker. Unfortunately, Finn is pretty thick when it comes to this stuff.

Film

Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)

Television

Saturday Night Live, “Tina Fey and Amy Poehler/Bruce Springsteen”

Not one of the best Christmas episodes and a little lackluster for two HUGE alums coming back. Still, “Meet Your Second Wife” is dark and hilarious, and seeing Kate McKinnon’s and Amy Poehler’s Clinton impressions together is fun.

Television

Saturday Night Live, “Chris Hemsworth/Chance the Rapper”

People picking on Colin Jost is never not funny to me, but the standout for me is the “Our Friend Claire” sketch. It takes the “hur hur men in dresses are inherently funny” conceit and actually makes it funny by making it about Hemsworth trying to infiltrate a ladies’ brunch to make himself feel better about his looks; all the cast members overselling this bit—Cecily Strong especially—make it really perfect.

Hannibal, Hannibal/Will, “knife and fork” by disenchanted

A breathtaking soak that is at the same atmospheric pitch at the show itself. Marvelous. (Also, I’m a monster, because that thigh prosciutto sounded SO. GOOD.)

Television

A Very Murray Christmas (2015)

Too cynical and grumpy and indie for my tastes. Miley Cyrus can still SING, though, and George Clooney affably popping out behind a tree to talk about Santa’s love life is both great and traumatizing.

Saturday Night Live, “Ryan Gosling/Leon Bridges”

Aidy Bryant wins this episode with Morgan, the overexcited thirteen year old, and almost not breaking in that alien abduction sketch. (Love that misplaced confidence.) And I kind of adore the Kinky Elves? It’s such a silly sketch, but Kenan and Vanessa’s little excited physical ticks are hilarious. As was Gosling’s elf losing all interest as soon as he realized no shenanigans were to be had. It was also good the first time. And then Taran pulled out a George Clooney impression? Is he just king of impossible male impressions? Magnificent.

The Comeback Kid (2015)

John Mulaney’s greatest bits are the long, intricately woven stories he often tells at the end of his acts—like the Salt and Pepper Diner or “The One Thing You Can’t Replace.” And The Comeback Kid has an amazing story about Bill Clinton that is perfect. Also, Petunia shows up!

Sailor Moon, “Shadow of Evil: the Trio's Last Chance”

WAIT, WHAT? The Amazon Trio learn that they aren’t, technically, people, sending Fish’s Eye into an identity crisis over whether or not he even has a soul. This is some dark stuff.

Sailor Moon, “Mirrors of Dreams: the Amazon's Last Stage”

And it gets darker… until all three are redeemed, despite their rampage of assault across Tokyo for the last few weeks. I really do love Fish’s Eye trying to negotiate his humanity, though.

Sailor Moon, “ The Coming Terror of Darkness: Struggle of the Eight Guardians”

Oh, Pluto.

Sailor Moon, “The Shining Shooting Star: Saturn and the Messiah”

That shot of Moon returning from the orb, her eyes just dead? Oh, man. Shivers.

Sailor Moon, “A New Life: Parting of the Stars of Destiny”

THIS IS SO UNNECESSARY. Also: nobody is asking enough questions about that baby.

Sailor Moon, “A Guardian’s Realization: Strength Lies Within a Pure Heart”

And Chibi-usa gets to stay! I do love how all the Guardians get Chibi-usa super personal and meaningful gifts, while Mamoru gets her… a pressed rose.

Sailor Moon, “Meeting of Destiny: The Night Pegasus Dances”

…does Fish Eye wear a puffy blue jumpsuit? And Tiger’s Eye, he is honestly wearing a pair of razor blades as earrings? Holy cow, we’ve found the worst dressed people in a nineties shoujo anime.

Television

Sailor Moon, “A Bewitching Flower That Steals Hearts: Tellu, the Third Witch”

Kaolinite’s life just sucks, doesn’t it?

Saturday Night Live, “O.J. Simpson/Ashford and Simpson”

Yes, as a child of the nineties, it is weird to see Simpson host Saturday Night Live. But I’m also reminded of how comedically dark the seventies were—Franken and Davis do a bit where the joke is that a terminally ill Franken is telling terrible jokes, made darker by a tearful Davis hovering over him—and that’s always unsettling. Not unsettling: the stink eye Newman throws to the camera when Simpson mistakenly calls her “Jane” during Weekend Update. She’s such a genius.
